Founded in 1969, the Children's Art Carnival (CAC) was a Harlem-based non-profit organization that provided free arts and educational programs for young people ages four to twenty-one, training courses for educators, and career development services for young adults. The collection consists of four audio recordings of radio interviews with Betty Blayton-Taylor, the founding director of the CAC.
Founded in 1969, the Children's Art Carnival (CAC) began as a community outreach pilot program of the Museum of Modern Art. In 1973, the CAC became a separate nonprofit entity and relocated to 62 Hamilton Terrace in Harlem, New York City. Partnering with twelve schools, the CAC hosted after-school art workshops in painting, printmaking, ceramics, puppetry, photography, filmmaking, writing, graphic design, printing, sewing, and costume design for over two thousand students in its first year. Artist Betty Blayton-Taylor served as executive director from the program's inception, overseeing the organization's expansion in the subsequent decades.
The Children's Art Carnival audio collection consists of four audio recordings of radio interviews with Betty Blayton-Taylor and two participants of the program, organized in chronological order. Blayton-Taylor discusses the work of the CAC and her personal art career. Square brackets indicate unclear spelling of participant's name.
