The Hamilton Fish Park Branch of The New York Public Library opened in 1909 on the lower east side of Manhattan. Construction of the original building was funded by Andrew Carnegie. The branch moved into a new building at 415 East Houston Street in 1961. The branch and its neighborhood park are both named for Hamilton Fish (1808-93), the distinguished American statesman who was Governor of New York and Secretary of State under Ulysses S. Grant.
