Scope and arrangement
John Sergeant (1779-1852) was an American lawyer and politician who served the stateof Pennsylvania as attorney general for Philadelphia; as a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives; as president of the Pennsylvania Board of Canal Commissioners; and later as legal counsel to the Bank of the United States. The letters concern various legal matters, predominantly stemming from his private law practice, but with some written in his various political capacities, with several referencing federal banking matters.
