Correspondence between Rear Admiral Andrew Hull Foote and various parties written between 1852 and 1862. Topics include the temperance movement, the discharge of an "impertinent" sailor, claims filed against the vessel "Martha" for seamen's wages, and Foote's book Africa and the American Flag. Also present are social invitations, and letters of congratulations, reference, and introduction. Some letters, including those relating to Africa and the American Flag, are manuscript copies

Some material was originally received as part of the Thomas J. Taylor collection. Letters relating to Africa and the American Flag were transferred from the Preparations Division after being removed from a scrapbook of clippings. Scrapbook has been filmed; see call number *Z-1422.
