Denis Wortman (1835-1922) was an American clergyman, writer and poet. Collection consists of correspondence with transcripts, genealogy, notes, and memoranda relating to the military career of Lt. Col. George Croghan (1791-1849). Correspondence, 1887-1921, concerns Croghan's controversial defense of Fort Stephenson, Ohio, against the command of his superior officer, General William Henry Harrison, during the War of 1812. Also included are transcripts of contemporary letters about the affair, an emendated typescript by Denis Wortman on the discovery of the Croghan-Harrison correspondence, genealogy of the Croghan family, and notes and memoranda relating to George Croghan.
