Papers consist of letters, 1787-1828; undated mainly incoming from business associates, some personal from correspondents which include DeWitt Clinton, Samuel Latham Mitchell, Nicholas Low, Gordon S. Mumford and Charles Wilkes. Related material is accounts 1784-1820; undated; shipping papers 1788-1811; undated; Articles of Partnership with Peter Ludlow; insurance policies and legal papers -miscellaneous.
The next section covers when Van Zandt served as Alderman in Public Office. Letters, 1804-1807 include correspondents Peter Goelet, Benjamin Latrobe and John Trumbull. Common Council Resolutions and City Ordinance; Reports and Statements complete this section. Topics include petitions to the Common Council which relate to the Brooklyn Ferry, street commissioners, meat vendors, lands of Peter Goelet and salaries of justices and clerks, etc.
