Wynant Van Zandt (1767-1831) was a New York City merchant and alderman. He founded the Zion Episcopal Church in Little Neck (now Douglaston), New York. Collection consists of correspondence, accounts, legal records, alderman papers, and family materials. Correspondence, 1787-1828, concerns business, political, family, and personal matters. Van Zandt's correspondence, 1803-1807, when he held public office an an alderman includes topics such as New York City regulations and real estate. Also, accounts, 1784-1820; shipping papers, 1788-1811; miscellaneous legal papers; council resolutions; photograph of portrait of Van Zandt; and family tree.

Biographical/historical information

Wynant Van Zandt jr. was a New York City merchant and Alderman. He was born Aug. 11, 1767 to Wynant Van Zandt (Dutch descent) and Jane Colgan. Van Zandt besides being a merchant and Alderman in Public Office, founded the Zion Episcopal Church at Little Neck (now Douglaston). He married Maria Allaire Underhill in 1788, who had five sons. Van Zandt died in 1831 and was buried in the church vault of the Zion Episcopal Church.

Scope and arrangement

Papers consist of letters, 1787-1828; undated mainly incoming from business associates, some personal from correspondents which include DeWitt Clinton, Samuel Latham Mitchell, Nicholas Low, Gordon S. Mumford and Charles Wilkes. Related material is accounts 1784-1820; undated; shipping papers 1788-1811; undated; Articles of Partnership with Peter Ludlow; insurance policies and legal papers -miscellaneous.

The next section covers when Van Zandt served as Alderman in Public Office. Letters, 1804-1807 include correspondents Peter Goelet, Benjamin Latrobe and John Trumbull. Common Council Resolutions and City Ordinance; Reports and Statements complete this section. Topics include petitions to the Common Council which relate to the Brooklyn Ferry, street commissioners, meat vendors, lands of Peter Goelet and salaries of justices and clerks, etc.
