Scope and arrangement
The collection consists of correspondence to the Asst. Paymaster of the "Passaic ", Jesse Woodbury, from high officials of the Navy Dept. and the Treasury Dept. (1862-1863). There are a few letters from Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy. This series includes the official correspondence of the U. S. Steamer "Sacramento" (1864-1866). Also included are the proceedings of a court martial on the "Passaic" on Oct. 7, 1863. There are many abstracts of small stores (1862-1863), vouchers for clothing and money (1862- 1863) and officer's orders and accounts (1862-1863). Present are transfer accounts (1862-1863), ratings (1861-1864), reports and statements (1862-1863). One can also find ship's messes (1863) and muster rolls (1862-1863). In the collection are two packages of similar material. The first package contains the paymaster's letterbook (Oct. 1862-Dec. 1863), accounts of the medical dept. (1862-1863), registers of allotments (1862) which includes that of the U. S. Gunboat "Chocura" and receipts of pay and provisions received (1862-1863). The general muster book of the "Passaic" (Sept. 1862-Oct. 1863) comprises the second package.
