In 1880 the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) created a Dept. of Scientific Temperance Instruction, headed by Mary H. Hunt (1830-1906), to disseminate medical and social facts about alcohol. After Hunt's death, Cora F. Stoddard (1872-1936) continued the work through the Scientific Temperance Federation (STF) of Boston. Collection consists of correspondence and printed matter concerning temperance. Correspondence, 1883-1918, includes letters to Hunt and Stoddard relating to their activities on behalf of the WCTU and the STF. Also, one folder of printed temperance materials.
Mary H. Hunt (1830-1906) was a leader in the campaign to introduce temperance education into the schools. In 1880, the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) created a Department of Scientific Temperance Instruction, which Hunt headed, to disseminate medical and social facts about alcohol. Cora F. Stoddard (1872-1936) became Hunt's private secretary in 1899 and, after Hunt's death, continued her work through the Scientific Temperance Federation (STF) which was separate from the WCTU. In 1918 Stoddard re-joined the WCTU.
The collection consists of letters to Hunt and Stoddard concerning their temperance work. The letters from 1883 to April 1906 relate to Hunt's activities on behalf of the WCTU; the rest concern Stoddard's work with the STF. Many of the letters refer to routine matters, especially distribution of literature. There is one folder of printed temperance materials.
