Elizabeth Manning Sage was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1878. She was the daughter of Albany lumber merchant Dean Sage and Mabel Sard, and married Walter Lippincott Goodwin in 1899. Her school notebooks consist of notes and essays on Latin grammar, fables, mythology, science, and history.
