Emended holograph manuscript (21 leaves) of "In the Gateway of Nations," signed by Jacob A. Riis (1849-1914), journalist, author, social reformer, and photographer. Riis was born in Denmark and emigrated to the U.S. in 1870. While working as a reporter for the New York Tribune, he began his crusade to improve urban life. Riis's article, published in The Century Magazine in March, 1903, describes a recent visit to Ellis Island in comparison with his own arrival in 1870. The emendations in this manuscript were incorporated into the published version.
