John Lothrop Motley (1814-1877) was an American author. Collection consists of original manuscript notes for Motley's Merry Mount: a Romance of the Massachusetts Colony; research on the history, customs and manners of the first settlers of New England; and numerous quotations from original sources. Also, passages describing the intellectual and religious life of the Puritans and descriptions of Merry Mount itself, including a sketch entitled "Mish-Mash" which appears to be earliest written part of the romance.
