The Students for Federal World Government organization was established at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1946, renaming itself World Republic in 1947. World Republic was concerned primarily with the "people's convention" approach to world government; and disagreed with the approaches of the largest world government organization, United World Federalists, refusing an invitation to join them in 1947. World Republic remained active through at least 1953 as one of the leading student world government organizations. The records of World Republic are composed primarily of correspondence, meeting minutes, addresses, and articles relating to the activities of the organization within the world government movement. Materials range in date from 1946 to 1953.
The Students for Federal World Government organization was established at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1946, renaming itself World Republic in 1947. The membership of the organization was primarily college students, and unlike most other world government groups of the time, World Republic only allowed individuals actively participating in the movement to become members. World Republic was concerned primarily with the "people's convention" approach to world government; this also contrasted with many of the larger and more prominent groups of the time, which advocated for world government by working with the United Nations. When several of the leading world government organizations amalgamated to form the United World Federalists in 1947, World Republic actively refused to join, becoming the largest group not to do so. World Republic remained active through at least 1953 as one of the leading student world government organizations.
