Colt Family Genealogical Research Papers, Manuscripts and Archives Division, The New York Public Library.
The Colt family traced their lineage to John Colt who immigrated to the American colonies in 1636 or 1638 and Peter Colt (1744-1824) who served in the Continental Army from Connecticut. The Colt Family genealogical research papers consists primary of the research notes and correspondence of Francis S. and Harris Dunscomb Colt, brothers who sought to document the Colt family's descent. The papers also include genealogical charts and lists, as well as histories of the Colt family. The correspondence consists largely of responses to letters from people who bore the Colt family name and dates mainly from 1930-1936, with some additional letters from the late-19th and late-20th centuries. The family histories include a typescript copy of Peter Colt's "Account of the Colt Family," Francis S. Colt's manuscript on the history of the Colt family, and other typescript and manuscript copies of unidentified historical summaries of the Colt family. Allied families in this collection include Beaumont, Bowne, Child, Dunscomb, Grossinger, Hooker, McGill, More, Netherhall, Spencer, Turner, and Whiting.
