Village Neighborhood Committee records

The Village Neighborhood Committee was formed in 1960 by Greenwich Village residents who engaged in an active campaign to secure a branch of the New York Public Library for the historic Jefferson Market Courthouse building. The committee also raised money for the restoration and electrification of the clock in the buildings tower. The committees fundraising was achieved primarily through soliciting donations and selling Christmas cards. After they secured the library branch, the Committee continued to support the library and the clock tower by providing equipment, donating books, and decorating the building at Christmas. The committee continued in supporting the library until 1988, when they dissolved, giving their remaining funds and responsibility to the Peoples Action Committee for Village Libraries.
