Anna Quindlen (born 1952) is an author and journalist. The Anna Quindlen papers (1990-1992) contain incoming letters from colleagues, friends, and readers, mostly responding to Quindlen's New York Times column "Public and Private." Also present are copies of Quindlen's responses. Major topics discussed include abortion, women's roles in the Catholic Church, and the 1992 presidential campaign.

Biographical/historical information

Anna Quindlen (born 1952) is an author and journalist. Quindlen was hired at The New York Times as a reporter in 1977 and contributed as a columnist from 1981 to 1994. From 1990 to 1994, Quindlen wrote the op-ed column "Public and Private," for which she won the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary. Since leaving The Times, Quindlen has written best-selling fiction and non-fiction books and contributed columns to Newsweek.

Scope and arrangement

The Anna Quindlen papers (1990-1993) contain memoranda from New York Times colleagues and letters from colleagues and readers responding to her New York Times column "Public and Private." Also present are copies of Quindlen's replies. Readers' letters feature discussions on a variety of political and social topics, notably abortion, women's roles in the Catholic Church, and the 1992 presidential campaign. These include both positive and negative reactions to her writings.

In 1999, The Times archives discarded 12.5 linear feet of Anna Quindlen's readers' mail. The present collection is what they retained.
