The origins of the Armitage family can be traced to the 16th century in Lydgate, Yorkshire near Huddersfield in England. Part of the family settled in New York State in the 18th century. Collection consists of correspondence between members of the Armitage family in New York and their relatives in England. Letters, 1786-1847, mainly of Benjamin Armitage, cover such topics as the business of Weight Armitage & Co., English cotton manufacturers from Manchester; social and economic conditions in England and New York State in the early 19th century; and American politics in the 18th century.
