Scope and arrangement
The Fire Island Association and Citizens Committee for a Fire Island National Seashore collection, dating from 1960 to 1965, chronicles these organizations' advocacy efforts against the construction of a highway on the island and for the formation of the Fire Island National Seashore. The assembled collection contains printed matter created by the Fire Island Association (FIA) and Citizens Committee for a Fire Island National Seashore aimed at keeping their membership and the public informed of their efforts. The collection also features correspondence from and to elected officials about the Temporary State Commission on Protection and Preservation of the Atlantic Shore Front and the Congressional bill to create the Fire Island National Seashore.
Printed matter includes copies of the Congressional Record and bill from Representative Otis G. Pike on the formation of the Fire Island National Seashore, as well as local newspaper clippings, press releases, brochures, and bulletins about Moses's highway plan and the formation of the Fire Island National Seashore. There is also a brochure about the formation of Cherry Grove Permanent Dunes, Inc. (another environmental advocacy organization) and a newsletter advocating against the highway plan from the president of the Point O'Woods Association (a homeowners association).
Correspondence consists of letters about Moses's highway plan to and from Representative Otis G. Pike from FIA and citizens of Long Island and a letter from Governor Rockefeller's secretary. There are also letters from the Secretary of the Interior Stewart L. Udall and Representative John Lindsay about the Fire Island National Seashore.
