The Holland Society of New York (HSNY) was founded in 1885 for members who prove a direct lineage to early Dutch settlers of the colony of New Netherlands, and the original Dutch colonizers of the island called Mannahatta by the Algonquin tribe of Lenni Lenape inhabitants. The Society continues to publish de Halve Maen, "Magazine of the Dutch Colonial Period in America." A detailed history of the Society is provided on the NYHS current website, www.hollandsociety.org.
Arranged by year, the contents include correspondence, menus for Society dinners, directories of Officers, Committees, and Members, memorial announcements, and sheet music. Subject matter of the correspondence includes Society dinners, travel events, and annual meetings.
Unknown. Some papers are stamped "Gansevoort-Lansing collection," referencing the 211 boxes of materials donated to NYPL by Victor Hugo Paltsis in 1919, and indicating a possible source for the collection. The 1919 NYPL Bulletin lists 1 "volume" donated to the library by the Holland Society in November of that year, but does not provide details.
