Scope and arrangement
The New York Public Library has been collecting Political Campaign Ephemera since the late 1890s. The collection records United States Presidential elections; the elections of New York's Governors and Senators, and the elections of New York City government officials, from the Mayor, through to Community Board members.
Dating largely from the late nineteenth century through the early 21st century, items chiefly relate to the Democratic and Republican political parties, with some materials from other smaller political parties, and numerous independent candidates.
The majority of the collection consists of campaign literature such as posters, pamphlets, newsletters, flyers, and platforms. There are also speech transcripts, inauguration invitations, bumper stickers, buttons, and election guides.
