Collections in Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound

Collection consists of audio-visual materials representing selected productions that Jerry Bock wrote between 1960 and 2006. While there are some items containing complete audio or video productions of the shows, the majority are unpublished pre-production materials, including rehearsals, demo recordings, and "working copies" of songs, including a song about the race horse "Fly so free". There are also some documentary materials, such as awards show footage and radio shows about the productions. Many of the items are from Bock's more popular Broadway shows, including Fiddler on the Roof, The Rothschilds, She Loves Me, and Fiorello! Also represented are some of Bock's less well known works including 1040, (a show about the tax code), Happy Birthday Mr. Abbott, and Regarding the Lindsay Years, as well as many of his children's musicals including Brandon Finds his Star, The Land of Broken Toys, Danny and the Dragon, The Magic Journey, and the Adventures of Pinocchio. less

Noah Creshevsky (1945-2020) was an experimental electronic composer and pianist who pioneered the concept of hyperrealism in music, wherein existing recordings are electronically manipulated to achieve an exaggerated effect while remaining grounded in reality. Creshevsky's papers, dating from 1963 to 2014, emphasize his music production and composition with thousands of digital audio recordings he used as samples; notebooks; and scores. The collection also traces Creshevsky's professional career with writings, photographs, and press and publicity materials. less

Alan Hunter (born 1957) is a television and radio personality and actor who was one of the original five video jockeys (VJs) on the MTV (Music Television) network when it began broadcasting in 1981. The Alan Hunter MTV video recordings, dating from 1979 to 2007 (bulk dates 1981 to 1987), document mainly the early years of MTV and 1980s popular music and culture in general, as well as Hunter's career before and after his time with the network. The collection consists primarily of home recordings of daily MTV programming, series, documentaries, and specials. Recordings apart from MTV include interviews with Hunter, and his acting, television hosting, radio, and commercial appearances. less

William Schimmel (1946 - ) is an American accordionist and composer, credited with the resurgence of the accordion as an instrument in modern music, as well as the revival of tango in the United States. The William Schimmel video recordings, dating from 1995 to 2013, mainly document the annual three-day masterclass and concert series Schimmel curates in New York City, presented by the American Accordionists' Association. The collection also contains bound books containing copies of the masterclass and concert programs, as well as clippings and flyers documenting the events. less

Irving Teibel (1938-2010) was a sound engineer and photographer, best known for his field recordings of natural sounds which he released as the Environments series of long-playing records on his own Syntonic Research Inc. label. Teibel's papers, dating from the 1950s to 2011, document his work as a sound engineer, business owner, and photographer/designer. They consist of audio recordings, the files of Syntonic Research Inc., and Teibel's photography and designs. less
