Matti Haim (d. 1967) was a Jewish dancer, teacher, and choreographer. The collection dates from 1949 to 1963 and holds essays, book outlines, and manuscript drafts for two of her choreographic compositions, On Chinese Soil, and The Fifth Dimensional Cycle.

Biographical/historical information

Matti Haim (d. 1967) was a Jewish dancer, teacher, and choreographer. She studied under Martha Graham before making her choreographic debut in a creative concert at the Women’s Club in Paterson, New Jersey. She taught and performed at several churches, schools, and Jewish community centers in New York and New Jersey during the 1940s and 1950s. She also taught dance theory and practice at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Her choreographic compositions include Phenomena of the Psychic, On Chinese Soil, and The Fifth Dimensional Cycle. Haim was conductor for the School of Contemporary Dance, N.Y. until her death in 1967.

Scope and arrangement

The collection dates from 1949 to 1963 and holds essays, book outlines, and manuscript drafts for two of Matti Haim's choreographic compositions, On Chinese Soil, and the Fifth Dimensional Cycle. The manuscript drafts consist of poetic descriptions that the creator describes as “dramatic poetic plays.” The compositions are both handwritten and typewritten. Some pages consist of individual quotations or poems. Two typewritten drafts of an outline for a book entitled The Dancer’s Art and Its Many Extensions are present. The collection also contains biographical essays, project outlines for a Guggenheim grant fellowship application, and drafts of Haim’s resume.
