Scope and arrangement
The Ballet Foundation gift, donated to the Dance Collection after the Foundation closed in 1984, contains orchestral and part scores for 82 ballets, as well as miscellaneous instrumental and vocal scores. The scores are boxed and grouped alphabetically by ballet title. Within each ballet, the part scores are organized by instrument. Those scores for which there are only one or two parts are also arranged alphabetically by ballet title and are collected in two boxes marked “Miscellaneous Ballet Scores.” Various instrumental and vocal scores which do not relate to specific ballets are arranged alphabetically by composer's name and are located in three boxes marked “Miscellaneous Scores.”|||The Box Inventory list identifies the ballet, the composer and which orchestral parts are contained in each box. If the ballet score is contained in more than one box, the publishers and type of transcription, whether manuscript or manuscript reproduction, are identified under the Box Inventory heading for the first box. The total number of parts, orchestral and piano scores is listed for each ballet at the end of the entry.|||Two other lists serve to further index the collection. A list of Ballets, by title, indicates the number of the box in which the score can be found. This list includes both those ballets for which there are complete scores and those for which there are only partial scores. A list of Ballet scores, by composer, includes both the title of the ballet by each composer, the title of the musical work if different from the title of the ballet, and the number of the box in which the score can be found.
