Scope and arrangement
The Mexico Profundo "Light and Shadows" exhibit photographs, dating from 2007 to 2014, consist of color prints and wall text used in The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (LPA) reading room exhibit, as well as additional shots not displayed in the exhibit, pictures of the exhibition opening, biographical information for three of the photographers, and ephemera. The ephemera consists of postcards about the exhibit's opening event at Hunter College, a press review of the project written in Spanish, and a publicity release about the curation of the exhibit.
Materials retained from LPA's exhibit are composed of four or five prints from each of the five photographers, along with wall text listing photographer, title, and date, as well as information about the location and event depicted. Some of the prints depict people dancing while others show parades or people resting. Most of the prints and wall text used in the exhibit feature traditional fiesta dances from Oaxaca, Guerrero, and the Federal District. Dances appearing in the photographs include la Danza de la Pluma in Oaxaca (photographs by Diego Huerta), Danza de los Apaches in Guerrero (photographs by Roberto Aschentrupp), dances at the Pendón Festival in Guerrero (photographs by Mario Aguirre Mazón), dances dedicated to our Lady of Guadalupe in the Federal District (photographs by Octavio Nava), and dancers resting during Festivity Parachicos in Chiapas (photographs by Abril Cabrera Aguilar).
The collection also has pictures that were not displayed in the reading room. Most of these photographs were created by Aschentrupp and Nava and depict traditional fiesta dances from the states of Guerrero, Hidalgo, and Puebla. There are also prints by Aguirre Mazón, Cabrera Aguilar, and Huerta of dances from the states of Oaxaca, Michoacàn, and Guerrero.
The collection includes three photographer files for Aschetrupp, Cabrera Aguilar, and Aguirre Mazón. The photographer files hold uncropped duplicates of pictures displayed and not displayed in the LPA reading room, biographical information in Spanish and English, as well as wall text for each of the pictures.
Other pictures in the collection depict the exhibition opening at Hunter College.
The photographs contain postcards, a publicity release, and a press review about the opening and background of the exhibit.
