Scope and arrangement
The Zachary Freyman photographs are undated, but Freyman was a practicing photographer from the 1950s through the 1960s. This collection covers Freyman's work for Dance Magazine. Freyman worked with dancers in a studio rather than during live performances, and each dancer's portfolio includes traditional headshots and full-bodied portraits of the dancer in motion.
The collection comprises negatives with the ballet dancer or performance identified and is arranged alphabetically. There are also two boxes of prints in the collection, and some have been mounted on board. Some prints have the dancer or performance identified, but most do not have any identifying information.
Many of the dancers in this collection were participants in a Jacob's Pillow performance or members of a larger dance company, including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, or Limón Dance Company. Specific dancers of note in the collection include Alvin Ailey, Janet Collins, Anna Halprin, Judith Jamison, José Limón, Alicia Markova, Yvonne Rainer, Chita Rivera, and Paul Taylor. Freyman also photographed the dancers from the New York City Ballet for the 1964 production of The Nutcracker in costume.
