Edward Effron is a lighting designer, photographer, and former dancer. His collection consists of contact sheets and negatives depicting many professional dancers and dance companies between 1965 to 1971.

Biographical/historical information

Edward Effron earned a biology degree from the University of Wisconsin, before embarking on a career in dance. He graduated from the Juilliard School in New York City, and worked as a dance photographer to supplement his income. A knee injury ended Effron's dance career, and he shifted his focus and career to lighting design. Effron is the author of the 1986 book, Planning and Designing Lighting. He has done lighting design for numerous dance companies throughout the United States and Europe.

Scope and arrangement

The collection dates from 1965 to 1971, and holds contact sheets and negatives that depict dancers and dance companies. This includes Juilliard productions choreographed by Anna Sokolow, José Limón, and Richard Englund, as well as performances and choreography by James Cunningham, Yvonne Rainer, Judith Dunn, Paul Sanasardo, Eleo Pomare, Fred Benjamin, Irene Feigenheimer, Bill Dunas, and Art Bauman. Effron had a detailed numbering and filing system, and each contact sheet and negative is labeled with a letter and number that corresponds to the descriptive index located in box 2, folder 3.
