Scope and arrangement
The collection dates from 1912 to 1938, and contains approximately 500 acetate negatives compiled by Grant Hyde Code during his tenure at the Brooklyn Museum Dance Center. Many of the negatives are dance publicity stills depicting performances in New York City. The negatives are arranged alphabetically by name or title. Some of the dancers pictured include Lew Christensen, Alexandra Danilova, William Dollar, Martha Graham, Hanya Holm, Doris Humphrey, Eleanor King, Harold Kreutzburg, Annabelle Lyon, Sophie Maslow, Anna Pavlova, Elise Reiman, Ted Shawn, Daphne Vane, Heidi Vosseler, Charles Weidman, Helga Weigert, and Mary Wigman. Some of the companies represented include American Ballet Company, Ballet Caravan, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and Dora Menzler Dance Group. The negatives are all numbered and housed in sleeves that include detailed information about each image. There are also ten glass plate negatives and fourteen prints depicting Alexandra Danilova, Anna Pavlova, Ted Shawn, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, and Mary Wigman. Additionally, there is group of dance negatives from National Geographic Magazine which are arranged chronologically.
