Petrus van Muyden was a Dutch ballet dancer, choreographer, and teacher. His collection contains photographs of his dance career, including performances, classes, and images of other dancers with whom he collaborated or taught.

Biographical/historical information

Petrus van Muyden was a Dutch ballet dancer, choreographer, and teacher. He danced with the Netherlands Ballet, Ballet Der Lage Landen, and the Scapino Ballet from the mid-1930s until 1958, when he moved to the United States. Van Muyden performed the San Francisco Ballet in the 1960s, and taught dance classes throughout the 1970s. He died in 1986.

Scope and arrangement

The collection dates from 1935 to 1984, and contains photograph prints that chronicle the career of Petrus van Muyden. The images depict his performances in the Netherlands and United States, headshots of van Muyden, and photographs of him teaching dance classes. Many of the images are dated, but most are not labeled with performance names or locations. However, there is one folder that consists exclusively of photographs from a 1978 American Dance Ensemble performance. The collection also holds an assortment of photographs of other dancers that include inscriptions to van Muyden from Cynthia Gregory, Fritz Ludin, Nicholas Petrov, Vicente Romero, and Jocelyn Vollmar.
