Scope and arrangement
The Juilliard School programs and journals, dating from 1951 to 1990, chronicles both the school's productions and publications, and the performances and events of professional ballet and modern dance companies. The collection contains mostly programs with some fliers, schedules, reports, and an inventory. The bulk of the collection consists of programs from professional modern dance companies and dance festivals. Some of the professional dance company programs contain circled dancer names with annotations that identify the dancers as Juilliard alumni or faculty members. It is unclear who created the annotations in the programs. The Juilliard programs and publications reflect the school's name change from the Juilliard School of Music to the Juilliard School in 1968.
The Dance Companies and Events group dates from 1952 to 1980, and records productions by mostly modern dance companies. Present in the group are: American Dance Theatre, Erick Hawkins Dance Company, José Limón Dance Company, Joyce Trisler Danscompany, Martha Graham Dance Company, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and Paul Taylor Dance Company. Some ballet companies, such as Robert Joffrey Ballet, the Royal Ballet, Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and New York City Ballet, are represented as well. There are a small number of theatrical Broadway and off-Broadway programs featured in this group. Other materials include a number of dance festival programs, Capezio Award programs, and Louis Horst's memorial program. Of note is the 1963 Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts report announcing the expansion of Lincoln Center and the establishment of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The group is filed alphabetically by dance company or event title.
The Juilliard School Events and Publications group dates from 1951 to 1990, and illuminates the school's seasonal stage productions by year. The group is composed primarily of programs and fliers from Juilliard's production season which encompasses the dance, drama, and music divisions of the school. While the Dance Division and Juilliard Dance Ensemble's productions are represented heavily, there are a small number of music and drama programs as well. There are some commencement and convocation programs mixed in with the seasonal production programs. The group also holds some publications, such as the Juilliard Review Annual and Juilliard News Bulletin. These publications were sent to students, faculty, alumni, and donors, and include articles about school events and productions, commencement and convocation addresses, alumni notes, obituaries, and announcements. Of note are a program from the 1969 Juilliard School dedication concert; and programs and a costume inventory with instructions from the Dance Division's trip to the International Festival of Dance Academies in Hong Kong. The group is filed chronologically by event, season, or publication date.
