Virginia Tanner was a dance educator and founder and director of the University of Utah Children's Dance Theatre. The Virginia Tanner papers document Tanner's work teaching dance to children from 1953 to 1979.

Biographical/historical information

Virginia Tanner was a dance educator. She was born in 1915 in Salt Lake City, and studied dance with Doris Humphrey. She founded the Children's Dance Theatre at the University of Utah in 1949, and later served as the director of the university's Creative Dance program. She lectured on dance education at schools around the United States. Tanner continued to work with the Children's Dance Theatre until her death in 1979.

Scope and arrangement

The Virginia Tanner papers document Tanner's work as a dance educator from 1953 to 1979. The papers date from 1959 to 1979, but include copies of earlier materials. The papers contain Tanner's notes for lectures and for a workshop about teaching dance to children; clippings, programs, and correspondence regarding the Children's Dance Theatre; and certificates and letters of recognition and appreciation. All the materials are copies, with the exception of an original program and an original news clipping.
