Stuart Hodes was a dancer, teacher, and a dance panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts. The Stuart Hodes papers hold his National Endowment of the Arts dance panel books for the years 1974 to 1976.
Stuart Hodes was a dancer, teacher, and a dance panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts. After serving as a bomber pilot in World War II, Hodes began dancing with the Martha Graham Dance Company. While dancing with Graham, Hodes also appeared in the Broadway productions Paint Your Wagon (1951) and Kismet (1953). After retiring from performance Hodes taught at various institutions, eventually becoming Dean of Dance at New York University. He also served as a Dance Panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts, and Dance Representative at The New York State Council of The Arts. Hodes began writing and blogging in his 80s.
The Stuart Hodes papers hold National Endowment of the Arts dance panel books for the years 1974 to 1976. Panel books consist of meeting agendas and categorized applications by various dancers, groups, schools, and others seeking funding from the endowment. These reports were issued to panelists several weeks before each meeting. Some of the books are annotated.
