The Cubiculo Theatre was a center for the performing arts, film and poetry, located at 414 West 51st Street. The Cubiculo Theatre records include notes, press releases, press reviews, programs and the occasional photograph.

Biographical/historical information

Elaine Sulka (1934-1994) a native New Yorker, was an actress, director and co-founder of the National Shakespeare Company and the Cubiculo Theatre with her husband Philip Meister (d.1983). The Company and the Theatre were founded in the 1960s. Sulka and her husband served as the only directors until their respective deaths.

The Cubiculo Theatre was a center for the performing arts, film and poetry, located at 414 West 51st Street. The National Shakespeare Company and the Cubiculo Theatre operated in the same space. After Elaine Sulka's death, in 1994, the Company and the Cubiculo Theatre continued under the direction of Greg Lombardo and Tom Trudgeon until 1998.

Scope and arrangement

The Cubiculo Theatre records documents the dance programs and artists who performed at the Cubiculo Theatre. The files indicate that the Cubiculo Theatre received grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The performers and companies of the Cubiculo were selected for their innovative and original works. A few of the artists were returning guests.

There are two unrelated programs dating from before the creation of the collection (1938 and 1963, respectively).

The files include notes, press releases, press reviews, programs and the occasional photograph.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged chronologically by season and performance date.

The collection maintains its original order. The folders and the box were replaced with acid free stock. Information, from the previous folders, was transferred to the new folders.
