Joanna Baillie, Scottish playwright and poet. Some of the Pforzheimer Collection's Joanna Baillie manuscripts have been published, either in Judith Bailey Slagle's edition of The Collected Letters of Joanna Baillie (1999), or in Thomas McLean's Further Letters of Joanna Baillie (2010). When possible, items in this finding aid are listed with page references to the printed publications. Researchers are strongly encouraged to consult the published editions before requesting manuscripts.
Administrative information
Custodial history
Only two of the Pforzheimer Collection's Joanna Baillie manuscripts were bought by the Collection's founder, first Carl H. Pforzheimer (1879-1957). Both items were letters purchased in the early 1950s, and both were somewhat incidental acquisitions. The letter to Mary Hunter, Irish autograph collector, came with a cache of correspondence solicited by Hunter from various authors of the period. The letter to Miss Murray came with purchases from the sale of the autographs of Hallam Murray (1854-1934), of the John Murray family publishing firm.
Between 1957 and 1986, eight Joanna Baillie letters, including the two mounted within the Martin Archer Shee Autograph Album, were acquired under the auspices of the Pforzheimer Foundation. Since the Pforzheimer Collection's 1986 arrival to The New York Public Library, seven additional Joanna Baillie letters have been added. Because the Pforzheimer Collection collects actively, its holdings in Joanna Baillie manuscript material may grow in the future as items become available for acquisition.

In addition to the items listed in this finding aid, The New York Public Library holds Joanna Baillie manuscripts in other divisions, including the Manuscripts and Archives Division and the Henry W. and Albert A.
