Scope and arrangement
This collection consists of a typescript memoir, various correspondence, working papers, and Byron-related memorabilia.
In the memoir (405 p.), Marchand describes his early years in the Pacific Northwest, his experiences as one of the first faculty members of the University of Alaska in the early 1920s, travels, especially his first visits to Europe in the 1920s and 1930s, graduate school, his teaching career, his research on Byron's life and work, professional activities, interactions with colleagues, and other topics. There are also a color photograph of Marchand, taken in 1983, and a copy of the galley proof of his biographical sketch for the 1997 Who's Who in America.
