Red half morocco album with gilt spine titling ("MSS. / BOWRING / CORRESPONDENCE / 1822-1854"), containing 59 manuscript letters addressed to John Bowring, the English politician, diplomat and writer. Includes letters to Bowring in his capacities as political editor of Jeremy Bentham's radical Westminster Review; as comissioner to investigate Britain's international commercial relations; as consul at Canton; and as governor of Hong Kong. Correspondents include: Maria Edgeworth, novelist and educationist; Richard Cobden, manufacturer and politician; Lord Palmerston, Prime Minister; Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, novelist; and over fifty others. Also included are two letters and a list of books in Bowring's hand; an 1808 letter from the Duke of Wellington to Lt. John Paul of the 33rd Regiment; and an engraving of an English Water Spaniel, by J. Scott, Jun., after C. Tourne.
