Charles Burney, British musician and author. He is the father of Frances Burney, Madame d'Arblay, the writer. Holograph report (draft?) : 1792 : (MISC 0963) : 2 p.; with suggestions on the formation of a musical band to accompany Lord Macartney on his 1792 mission to China, with assesments of the musical tastes of the Chinese people; begins, "A band of Instrumental Musicians, consisting of 6 performers, wd be able to execute the greatest variety of good compositions ...; also including, "Harmony, or music in different parts, seems to be utterly uncultivated & unknown in every part of the world except Europe." At the end of the manuscript is a note in Burney's hand, "For Lord Macartney when preparing for him a band to attend his Lordp. in his Chinese Embassy, 1792.".
