The Chamberlain and Lyman Brown Papers are 351 linear feet and contain business and personal correspondence, scrapbooks, autographs, legal and financial papers, scripts, photographs, clipping files, and production materials documenting their work as theatrical agents, managers, and producers. The papers provide a history of the entertainment industry from the end of the 19th century through the middle of the 20th century. A number of family and personal papers are also included. less

Stanley Woolf was born in New York City and moved to Milwaukee as an older child. He returned to New York as an adolescent and became an avid theatre-goer. By the mid-1920s he was performing with the Keith-Albee Vaudeville circuit with his own comedy and dance act called "The Vest Pocket Revue," and later in an act titled "Clowning's Quite Clever." In 1932 he began working as an indedendent booking agent for the vaudeville circuit and later with the Columbia Entertainment Bureau. In 1933, Woolf was arrested and then paroled on federal charges of passing counterfeit money. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and worked as an actor-director during his service. He also directed the Orpheum Players of the Orpheum Theatre in Reading, Penn., in the early 1940s. After World War II, Woolf directed the Civic Drama Guild, which toured plays and musicals, and later established the Stanley Woolf Players and the Stanley Woolf Circuit, which took theatrical performances to summer resorts in the Eastern United States. Woolf, named "the Belasco of the Borscht Belt," died in 1959. The two earliest scrapbooks document theatrical performances Woolf attended in New York City between 1912 and 1919. Charles O. Carey (1908-1981) was a stage manager, actor, and producer in New England, Pennsylvania, and New York summer stock theatre during the mid-20th century. The Tommy Brent collection of Charles O. Carey material contains biographical material, programs, clippings, and reproductions of photographs compiled by Brent that document Carey's work in summer stock from 1927 to 1963. less

Cornelius P. Cotter was a professor of political science at Stanford University. While earning his Ph.D. in Public Administration from Harvard University, and during his first years as a professor, he worked as a general manager, business manager, and public relations director for summer stock theatre companies. From 1949 to 1956, Cotter was employed with St. John Terrell's Music Circus in Lambertville, New Jersey; Niagara Falls Summer Theatre in Niagara Falls, Ontario; and the Melody Circus Theatre in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Cornelius P. Cotter papers, dated 1949 to 1958, highlight the business end of summer stock companies through correspondence, weekly operating statements, and budget memoranda. The companies' productions are documented through programs, fliers, clippings, and photographs; also included are programs for productions of related summer stock companies working during the early 1950s. Correspondence, most of which relates to Cotter's work with St. John Terrell, discusses plans for upcoming seasons, proposals to launch new summer stock companies, and budgetary concerns for the companies. less

Richard John Hughes, Jr. (1924-1996) was a stage manager, director, set designer, and actor in regional theatre, touring companies, and off-Broadway productions. The Richard Hughes collection dates from 1942 to 1993 and documents his training at the University of Texas, his participation in regional theatre and off-Broadway productions, and his work as production stage manager for the national tours of Man of La Mancha, Lovely Ladies-Kind Gentlemen, Irene, and Pippin. less
