Ellis Parker Butler was an American author best known for his story "Pigs is Pigs" (1905). During his lifetime he wrote 30 books and more than 2,000 stories and essays. His papers consist of his correspondence, a typescript of his story "The Goldfish Mystery" (1935), and a few pieces of ephemera. The correspondence includes letters from authors, editors, artists, politicians and others, together with some of Butler's replies, concerning the publication of his stories; his activities in connection with the Authors' League of America, the Authors' Guild, various clubs, committees and charities; and personal matters. Correspondents include Ellery Sedgwick and staff of The Atlantic Monthly, H.L. Mencken, writer and filmmaker Rex Beach, authors Porter Emerson Browne, Ernest Poole, Richard Harding Davis, Hamlin Garland, and George Barr McCutcheon, artist Tony Sarg, and many others. less

Herbert Mitgang (1920- ), author, editor, journalist, and motion-picture producer, was managing editor of the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, during World War II. After his war service, he joined the New York Times as a copy editor and reviewer. He served as supervising editor of the Sunday Times drama section from 1955 to 1962, editorial writer and member of the editorial board from 1963 to 1964 and again from 1967 to 1976. From 1964 to 1967 he was assistant to the president and the executive editor of CBS News and produced several documentary films. He taught at City College in New York, was a visiting lecturer at Yale University and served as president of both the Authors' League and the Authors' Guild. Since 1976 Mitgang has been a cultural correspondent and book reviewer for the New York Times. In addition to his work at the Times and CBS, he has written articles, novels and biographies and has edited several books. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, files relating to publications, notes, clippings, photographs, motion pictures, recordings, videotapes, and memorabilia that document Mitgang's activities as a journalist, author, editor, and film producer. Papers include general correspondence, 1945-1979; New York Times editorial correspondence, 1970-1976; and correspondence concerning Authors' Guild, 1957-1979, Authors' League, 1962-1973, and Times Op-Ed page. Also, typescripts, notes, clippings, and other materials for his articles, reviews, biographies, novels, scripts, and other writings; and files, 1983-1988, collected by Mitgang for his book Dangerous Dossiers. Other items consist of photographs, notebooks, awards, teaching notes, clippings, Stars and Stripes scrapbook, cartoons, and memorabilia. Correspondence also concerns the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Celebration of 1926. Financial papers consist of theater accounts, box office and royalty statements, and securities and insurance records. Production notes include cast lists, property lists, program outlines, stage directions, reports, scripts, synopses, and light plots. Publicity photographs are accompanied by letters seeking auditions or parts in Burnside productions.
