Joseph Hillyer Brewer was a publisher, librarian and president of Olivet College. Approximately fifty percent of the collection consists of genealogical notes, charts, correspondence, and clippings resulting from his research and that of other family members into the histories of the allied Ackerman, Bogardus, Bradley, Burr, Chardarayne, Creighton, Giles, Cropsey, Havens, Keeler, Montfort, Pryer, Roorbach, Stayner, Schuyler, Van Vechten, Ward, and Whiting families. The remainder of the collection is comprised of miscellaneous original material, ca. 1797-1927, relating to the above families, including military documents, correspondence, invitations, notices, tickets, calling cards, legal documents, and other family ephemera. Also included are portrait photographs and a few miniature paintings, mid- to late-19th century, of the Roorbach and allied Fuller, Hillyer, Van Vechten, and other families. Edward Guyre Burgess (1848-1919) was a grain merchant who lived and worked in both Montclair, New Jersey and New York, N.Y. He pursued his family genealogy as an avocation, tracing his lineage to 17th-century England through the Burgess and allied Winslow, Crosby, Cole and Robblee families.
