Edward Braman (1833-1907) of Hyde Park, N.Y. was a genealogist and local historian. The Braman family genealogical research papers consist of genealogical notes, compiled by Edward Braman, on the Braman family of Hyde Park, N.Y., New London County, Conn., and elsewhere, and the related Adams, Teel, Hitt, Dusenbury, Weaver, Garrison, Russell, Sexton, Van Vliet, and other families, as well as original family documents and manuscripts. The notes, dating 1853-1906, are mostly in bound volumes, organized by family name. Original papers include Cyrus Braman's manuscript singing book of hymn and psalm tunes, 1782-1783; a notice to him from the City of Norwich, with instructions for nightwatch duty, 1797; registers of sermons, 1826-1829; Samuel Braman's commissions as sergeant in the New York State Militia, 1825, and as Captain in the 84th Regiment, Infantry, 1830; an account book, 1840-1845, belonging to William Steele, the son in law of Braman's great-great-grandfather, who transacted business with John Jacob Astor; and assorted deeds, financial records, and notices. less

General George Stillman was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut, in 1751. He defended the coast of Maine from British attack during the American Revolution. He died in Machias, Maine, in 1799 Stillman's papers include his diary (1775-1776), which records incidents following the capture of the British sloop Margaretta; a service certificate signed by Major General Charles Lee; letters and orders from Colonel and Indian agent John Allan; commissions signed by John Hancock, Jeremiah Powell, T. Cushing, Samuel Adams, and Moses Gill respectively for Stillman's rank in the militia from Major to Brigadier General; and a certificate signed by Paul Revere and other officers of St. Andrew's Lodge, Boston, certifying that George Stillman is a Master Mason (1788) less

David W. (David Woodhull) Wetmore (1798-1879) was a New York City iron merchant. David W. Wetmore letters and documents, 1822-1869, consist of letters addressed to David W. Wetmore at New York, Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and Liverpool, England, 1845-1869, and Wetmore's certificates of appointment for the 75th Regiment of Infantry, N.Y.S. Militia, as ensign, captain and major, 1822-1827. Letters, in chronological order, chiefly concern his iron business, particularly production and sale of iron for the railroad and whaling industries. Correspondents include Henry Brevoort Jr., Stephen Vail, Lawrence Grinnell and other New England merchants, and Liverpool merchants Brown, Shipley & Co. There are letters to him from his wife and children (1847 June 22 and September 25), and other family members. Also included are six letters from his son-in-law Richard H. Chapell of New London, Connecticut, to Wetmore's son Jacob S. Wetmore concerning his father's whaling ventures and family matters, 1869. less

William Ronckendorff (1812-1891) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was an American naval officer. He joined the U.S. Navy as midshipman in 1832 (passed 1838), and was commissioned Lieutenant in 1843, Commander in June 1861, and Captain in 1866, retiring as Commodore in 1874. The William Ronckendorff papers, 1844-1896, chiefly contain naval orders and instructions documenting his service from 1859 to his retirement in 1874. Most items date from the Civil War, pertaining to his command of U.S. Ships Water Witch, San Jacinto, Ticonderoga, Powhatan, Monadnock, and Tonawanda. Ronckendorff's letter of November 21, 1862 to Gideon Welles (copy) describes his attempt to track the C.S.S. Alabama at Martinique; there are also instructions for the Monadnock on the James River at the fall of Richmond, April 1865, and a letter from Congressman Samuel J. Randall regarding Ronckerdorff's promotion prospects, 1870. Other items include his commission as Lieutenant, 1844, effective 1843, and incomplete instructions to his son George R. Ronckendorff upon his death, 1890. Also found are George R. Ronckendorff's passport, 1896, and a letter to him, 1894; a few genealogical notes and clippings; and a letter from [Philip McLachlin?] of Charleston, South Carolina expressing thanks to his friend Richard Dale at Philadelphia, dated May 12, [1817?]. less

Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was United States Secretary of the Treasury, 1795-1800; United States Circuit Court judge for the Second Circuit, 1801-1802; and governor of Connecticut, 1817-1827. Oliver Wolcott Jr. letters and documents, 1799-1826, contain three letters written or signed by him regarding government business to Governor Jedediah Huntington of Connecticut, 1799; to Governor Isaac H. Williamson of New Jersey, 1818; and to Lieutenant Colonel George Bomford, 1823; and a signed printed circular letter to the Governor of Ohio (Jeremiah Morrow), 1825, regarding state resolutions to emancipate the slaves. A personal letter to James W. Henry at Baltimore, 1807, introduces Virgil Maxcy; and a letter to Wolcott's wife Betsy with a torn date [December 1800] tells of the close electoral vote count for Burr and Jefferson in the presidential election. Also included are signed certificates for civil and military appointments, 1817-1826; an order to his bank for Archibald Gracie, 1806; and a clipped signature. less
