The papers document Andrews' personal life and professional career and activities. Correspondence, reports, printed material, and writings are included. The papers include manuscripts of Andrews' plays Climbing Jacob's Ladder, The Man Who Passed, and Matilda; the posthumously published The Black New Yorkers and an unpublished manuscript "Women ...With Banners and Human Rights: Laws, Statutes and Amendments in the Constitution of the United States." Andrews' professional activities at the Washington Heights Branch of the New York Public Library are, in part, very well documented by a series of scrapbooks containing photographs, broadsides and other printed material of the "Family Night at the Library" programs. Also included among the papers are some family correspondence, clippings, and a scrapbook relating to Andrews' husband, attorney and assemblyman William T. Andrews. less

This collection is mostly comprised of correspondence, meeting minutes, financial reports, and newspaper clippings pertaining to Black librarianship. There is a folder of minutes for the Black Librarians Caucus of Queens, the NYBLC predecessor, as well as policy statements from both American Library Association (ALA)'s Black Caucus and the NYBLC. The correspondence folder contains letters from Alex Haley, Senator (NY) Carl McCall, Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton, and E. J. Josey. Additionally, the collection includes letters documenting the Caucus' position on the showing of the film The Speaker during the 1977 (Detroit) ALA conference. The film's objective was to demonstrate the problems of censorship and First Amendment Rights violations but the ALA Black Caucus took a strong position against the film and ALA's selection of it. This position was fully supported by the NYBLC. Other material in the collection relates to a series of Genealogy and Oral History workshops presented by the Caucus to celebrate the Bicentennial in 1976. less

The Jean Blackwell Hutson photographs, dated 1890s to 1990s, were compiled by Jean Blackwell Hutson (1914-1998), a librarian who served as curator of the Schomburg Collection from 1948 to 1972, then chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture from 1972 to 1980. The photographs document her family life, travels, and professional career. The collection holds mostly photographs and to a lesser extent some negatives, telegrams and notes. less

Washington, Franz Boas, Benjamin Brawley, Countee Cullen, and others. Other letters from librarians and other professionals at black institutions; letters of congratulations on achievements, 1948-1950; and additional letters of a personal and professional content. Papers include programs, articles, text of a speech given at a commencement banquet, and minutes of the Bi-Racial Committee in which the motion to establish a separate Alabama Negro Library Association was passed, 1952.
