Morty Manford (1950-1992) was an activist and key strategist in the early days of the gay rights movement, a Legal Aid lawyer, and an Assistant Attorney General of New York State. While an undergraduate at Columbia University in 1971, he founded Gay People at Columbia, one of the first gay campus groups in the country. Subsequently, he began writing about the goals of the gay movement, speaking on college campuses and at gay clubs, and organizing protest demonstrations, parades, and rallies in support of gay rights legislation in New York City and throughout the United States. Among the many gay rights organizations he co-founded were the Gay Activists Alliance, which strove to bring gays together as a political force, the National Coalition of Gay Activists, which publicized and coordinated rallies and demonstrations on a national scale, and the clandestine Study Group, a New York-based think-tank which worked with the gay infrastructure in the state and local political establishments to influence political and public opinion and promote the state-wide activities of the gay rights movement. The papers of Morty Manford span the years 1962 to 1986 and chiefly document his activities as a leading activist and ideologist of the gay and lesbian rights movement. The Stephen Donaldson Papers document the varied career and tumultuous personal history of the writer and activist. The date span of the papers is 1965-1998. Howard J. Brown (1924-1975), a physician, was an innovative health planner and advocate for the gay rights movement. After working with several projects in New York City providing comprehensive health care and neighborhood medical services, he served as the City's Health Services Administrator from 1966 to 1968. He then became a professor of public health at New York University. In 1973 he became active in the gay rights movement and helped organize the National Gay Task Force. His book, Familiar Faces, Hidden Lives (published posthumously in 1976) described his life and discussed homosexuality in general. Collection contains correspondence, speeches, personal ephemera, drafts of writings, and other materials Brown collected relating to medicine or homosexuality. Bulk of the correspondence, 1942-1974, consists of letters congratulating Brown upon his appointment as Health Services Administrator and additional letters, 1973-1974, concerning his activities on behalf of gay rights. Brown's speeches, 1966-1974, are all about medicine or homosexuality. Personal ephemera includes certificates, awards, news clippings, photographs, student notes and papers, and 1966 appointment book. Other papers consist of teaching materials on public health; clippings, programs and articles relating to Brown's involvement with gay rights; drafts and notes about his book; and research materials on homosexuality. less

The Gay Men of African Descent, Inc. records (1986 - 1998) document the development of the largest black, gay-run, educational, social and political organization in the United States. Records include board of directors materials, a fairly comprehensive collection of newsletters, and information on GMAD's funding sources. Documentation on the organization's earliest years are augmented by transcripts of oral history interviews with both early and active members. less

Karla Jay is a lesbian feminist activist, author, and former professor of English at Pace University (New York). The collection contains correspondence, typescripts, and other items chiefly documenting Jay's work as a professor of English and as author and coeditor of books on the experiences of lesbians and gay men. The bulk of the collection pertains to her work as a writer and academic and includes some documentation of her activities as a pioneer feminist and lesbian activist with the consciousness raising group Redstockings and the Gay Liberation Front. The correspondence includes letters from many prominent writers and gay and lesbian rights activists, her literary agent, publishers, contributors to her anthologies, and alternative presses, as well as with academic and professional organizations. The collection also includes typescript drafts of the text of The Gay Report (which she co-authored with Allen Young) and the questionnaires returned by lesbian respondents; drafts of Jay's dissertation and other writings; slides; and audio recordings, chiefly of interviews with Jay or conducted by her from the 1970s to the 1990s. There are also miscellaneous records of IGIC, including correspondence, minutes, memoranda, photographs of gay rights demonstrations, scripts of plays by gay writers, and printed ephemera issued by gay, lesbian and AIDS organizations in the United States. less

These materials consist of audio tapes, videotapes and films that were culled from the organizational records and personal papers collected by the International Gay Information Center. In 1980 he founded New York City News, a newsmagazine for the gay and lesbian community, and was editor/publisher until it ceased publication in 1985. The Gay Alliance of Brooklyn was founded in 1971 by members of the Gay Activists Alliance in order to establish in their own borough an organization of gays and lesbians dedicated to the attainment of civil rights for gays. It sponsored films, forums, and dances and published (irregularly) a monthly newsletter. At its peak it claimed a membership of over 300. The organization appears to have been dissolved in early 1973. Included are minutes of general meetings and of the governing board, constitution and by-laws, and records of various committees including community relations, dance, membership, and newsletter committees. less

The Gay Switchboard of New York, Inc. was founded in New York City in 1971 to provide a free telephone information service for the homosexual community. The switchboard provided information on medical, legal, and social services available to the gay community, and also maintained listings of gay bars, bathhouses, etc. Although generally apolitical, the switchboard did maintain close ties with other gay organizations ans periodicals in New York City and around the country. The records cover the period 1972-1983, although the switchboard remained in operation after that time. Administrative records, telephone logs, and internal and external ephemera generated by the Gay Switchboard of New York, Inc., for the period between March 1972 and July 1983. The logs reveal the social, political, and recreational concerns of the New York gay community before the impact of AIDS. less

Fierce Pussy is a lesbian artist/activist public art collective formed in 1991 in New York City. Work of the collective focuses on issues of lesbian visibility and lesbian and gay rights. Collection consists of approximately thirty works by Fierce Pussy (with a few duplicates). Most items are 11" x 17" posters created to be "wheatpasted" in outdoor locations in New York City. Also, a few color-xeroxes and stickers. Messages on the posters and stickers pertain to lesbian and gay rights and visibility, and to AIDS. less

The Joseph Beam Papers consist of correspondence, conference materials, prison letters, writings by Beam and other authors, files of the National Coalition of Black Lesbians and Gays and its organizational journal Black/Out, and printed matter. The Correspondence series is divided into five subgroups: Family, General, Individuals, Organizations and Prison Letters. Significant correspondents include Barbara Smith, Essex Hemphill, Daniel Garrett, Renee McCoy, Assoto Saint, Colin Robinson, Craig Harris, Isaac Julien. Beam's writings and correspondence dealt with issues of gay life and civil rights for blacks and other minorities, and with contemporary developments in Philadelphia, including the police bombing of the MOVE headquarters in 1985. Other writings in the collection were destined for publication in the two anthologies conceived by Beam and the journals Black/Out and Other Countries. Contributors included Audre Lorde, Pat Parker, Samuel Delany, Melvin Dixon, Gilberto Gerald, Michelle Parkerson, Michael J. Smith, and Alice Walker. Also included are minutes of board meetings, financial reports, correspondence, memoranda, conference papers, and printed matter of the National Coalition of Black Lesbians and Gays, and subject files on AIDS awareness and prevention, prisoners' support groups, gay and lesbian entertainers and South Africa. The collection also documents activities of Black and White Men Together, Blackheart Collective and other black gay organizations. less

Christopher Street That New Magazine, Inc. (later That New Magazine, Inc.) was founded in New York City in 1976 by Charles Ortleb for the purpose of publishing CHRISTOPHER STREET (subtitled THAT NEW MAGAZINE), a monthly literary magazine for the gay community featuring fiction, nonfiction, poetry, news, book reviews and photography. The bulk of the records consists of authors' scripts and galley proofs. The authors' scripts of fiction and nonfiction were submitted by literary agents and publishers for review or serialization in CHRISTOPHER STREET. The galleys consist of articles considered for publication in THE CHRISTOPHER STREET READER (c1983) and those published in APHRODISIAC, FICTION FROM CHRISTOPHER STREET (1982). The monographs consist of scholarly articles on gays, lesbians and homosexuality. less

Arnie Kantrowitz is a writer, educator, and gay activist who was integrally involved in several gay activist groups in the 1970s and 1980s including the Gay Activists Alliance, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee. The Arnie Kantrowitz papers date from 1951 to 2008 and contain personal papers and organizational records chiefly reflecting Kantrowitz's activities as a writer, gay rights activist, and English professor. The collection consists of correspondence from friends, fellow writers, and readers; diaries and notebooks; records concerning his involvement in various gay rights organizations; files relating to his teaching career at the College of Staten Island; notes, drafts and manuscripts of his published and unpublished writing; sound and video recordings; and personal memorabilia. less

Jonathan Ned Katz (b. 1938) is an American playwright, historian, and gay rights advocate. His papers on his play, Coming Out! A Documentary Play About Gay Life and Liberation in the USA, date from 1972 to 1973 and include programs, fliers, posters, clippings, photographs, correspondence, and records of production expenses. The collection contains two copies of the script: an early version, which is unmarked, and a heavily annotated version used in the June 1972 production. The Jonathan Ned Katz papers reflect his life and career as an historian, author, LGBTQ rights advocate, teacher, and textile designer.
