Genealogist. Pershing's correspondence with members of the Edwards family, genealogical notes, completed questionnaires, and clippings, from his genealogical research on the Edwards family. Also, typescript copies and photocopies of 17th - 20th century Edwards family wills and other legal documents, inventories of household possessions, and correspondence. Much of the material in the collection is related to the Edwards Estate hoax in which Edwards family members were believed to be heirs to 77 acres of prime real estate on lower Manhattan Island, including land owned by Trinity Church. less

Edna Pearl Clay Goodspeed (1884-1963) was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution who served as a nurse overseas during World War I. Her ancestors included Revolutionary War soldiers Charles Mathewson, Capt. Aaron Coe, David Clay and Capt. Samuel Cobean, and tailor Otis Madison, who pioneered a new system for garment measuring and cutting in the early nineteenth century. At the time of Goodspeed's death she was preparing a history of the the Clay family of Ohio and related Pennock, Mathewson, Madison, Pontius and other families, entitled Some Ohio Pioneers. Her writings, notes and research materials were given to genealogist Helen B. (Blanchard) Hartman with whom Goodspeed had been collaborating before her death. The Clay family genealogical research papers consist of genealogical scrapbooks; correspondence of Edna Clay Goodspeed and Helen B. Hartman relating to their genealogical research on the Clay family and related Pennock, Mathewson, Madison, Pontius, Cobean, Hanna, Brinckerhoff, Coe, and Boyd families, with notes and family trees; some personal papers, 1916-1957, of Edna Clay Goodspeed; and the manuscript of Goodspeed's work, Some Ohio Pioneers. The scrapbooks contain original photographs of members of the Clay, Coe, Brinckerhoff, Cobean, DePuy families and their connections, circa 1850-1951; writings and correspondence, 1811-1962, including several original nineteenth-century letters, 1811-1858, with transcriptions, reflecting the everyday life of the Coe family, particularly Eliza Hanna Coe; clippings, 1903-1955; and family trees. Some original 18th and 19th century documents including a letter to Catharine Ludlow Ogden Hammond from her mother, S[arah] Ogden in Newark, concerning the mother's recent widowhood and other family matters, 1790; a family Bible record, 1806-1940, of the Barretts and Kortright families; an approbation (letter of introduction), November 17, 1840, for Philip Schuyler, who was a United States Consul at Liverpool and part of a commission "...to assist their subjects and people in their commerce and traffick there...," signed by Queen Victoria and Lord Palmerston; marriage certificates of Louis Phillippe de Luze and Sarah Ogden, Trinity Church, New York, 1821, and Arthur Mackie Foley and Sarah Alice de Luze, St. Mark's Church, New York, 1878 or 1879; and manuscript and typescript copies of 18th and 19th century wills, marriage certificates, and other legal documents. Of note are ca. 20 letters, ca. 1771-1828, received by Richard Harison of New York attorney-at-law, concerning family, business, and general matters.
