Chicago-born dancer and choreographer Marion Scott studied with Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman, Helen Tamiris and Daniel Nagrin, José Limón, Hanya Holm, and Anna Sokolow. She performed in the companies of Graham and Humphrey-Weidman, and was a leading dancer in the Tamiris-Nagrin Dance Company from 1955-1965. She was a teaching assistant to both Humphrey and Tamiris, and, in 1963, was made a Doris Humphrey fellow at Connecticut College. In the late 1940's she began performing her own choreography and for 20 years headed her own company, working with dancers Cliff Keuter and Elina Mooney (Marion Scott Dance Trio) and Don Redlich. She was co-founder of Contemporary Dance Productions, an organization that help provide opportunities to young choreographers to present their work in jointly shared programs. In 1969, Scott, finding her movement severely impaired by hip problems, went to the University of California in Los Angeles where she was Professor of Dance and resident choreographer for the UCLA Dance Company. Hip-replacement surgery forced an end to her active performing. Nevertheless, in 1985, at age 62, she created a solo entitled Psalm 1984,which she performed with the UCLA Dance Company. In 2002 at the Japan America Center, she received the Dance Resource Center's Lestor Horton Lifetime Achievement Award. A collection of personal letters, cards, notes, telegrams, and photographs. With the exception of several photographs from Miss Scott (Goldberg)'s adolescence, the material reflects her association with the Humphrey-Weidman Company, the 92nd Street YM-YWHA, and the Tamiris-Nagrin Company. The major part of this collection consists of correspondence to and from Irving Deakin primarily in relation to his association with Hurok Attractions and as General Manager of the San Francisco Civic Ballet in 1947-48 and in relation to his personal and professional associations with Adolf Bolm, Anton Dolin, and Antal Dorati. The collection falls into a natural chronological arrangement that gives a broad view of Deakin's associations with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the Original Ballet Russe, the beginnings of Ballet Theatre, the WQXR Music and balletradio program, the San Francisco Civic Ballet, and the first American tour of the Sadler's Wells Ballet. less

Mary Wigman, German modern dancer and choreographer, was born Mary Wiegmann, November 13, 1886 in Hanover. She trained first with Emile Jaques-Dalcroze in Hellerau and Dresden and later with Rudolf von Laban in Anscona, Switzerland and in Munich. Her debut as a concert dancer and choreographer occurred in 1919. Successful performances encouraged her to open her own school in Dresden, where among her first students were Yvonne Georgi, Gert Palucca, and Harald Kreutzberg. By 1925, her students included Ruth Abrahamowitsch, Hanya Holm, and Tilly Losch. Her students performed as a company, touring Western Europe throughout the 1930's. Wigman performed at the Berlin Olympics of 1936, but the National Socialists closed her school, and she became a teacher at the Leipzig Music Academy. After World War II, she returned to Berlin, re-opening her school in 1948, which became the center for the German modern dance movement. She choreographed over one hundred dances for herself and her dancers but also worked in various German opera houses, staging productions of Gluck in Leipzig and Mannheim and a famous joint performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Buranaand Catulli Carminain 1955.
