The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research was founded in 1901 in New York City by John D. Rockefeller for the advancement of medical research. Collection consists of correspondence of P.A. Levene of the Institute with displaced foreign physicians and chemists. Levene was a chemist who was a member of the Institute from 1907 to 1939. The foreign physicians and chemists sought to emigrate to the U.S. from Europe and especially Germany because they were of Jewish descent. Other correspondence is with referees and refugee aid organizations. less

The American Committee for the Guidance of Professional Personnel was formed in December, 1938, as a result of a meeting in Chicago of the Association of American Law Schools. Its purpose was to provide fellowships in the United States for refugee lawyers, many of Jewish origin, who sought retraining in American law schools. A selection committee was created to screen applicants. David Riesman of the University of Buffalo Law School and later Harvard was its secretary. Other members included Edmund M. Morgan, chairman; Arthur A. Ballantine, treasurer; Carl J. Friedrich; and Philip W. Amram. Records consist of correspondence of David Riesman, mainly with refugee lawyers, deans of American law schools, legal scholars, and practicing attorneys relative to the organization and funding of the Committee, and the provision of fellowships to refugee lawyers seeking retraining in American law schools. Included are a few fellowship applications and photographs submitted by applicants, budget working papers, and reports. Correspondents include Philip W. Amram, Arthur A. Ballantine, Ernst Fraenkel, Peter Goswyn Franck, Carl J. Friedrich, Rudolph M. Littauer, Walter Mendelsohn, and Edmund M. Morgan. less

Anne Marx was a poet, lecturer and editor. She was vice-president of the Poetry Society of America in 1978 and regional president of the National League of American Pen Women in 1992. She died April 16, 2006. The collection contains correspondence with friends and organizations, Poetry Society of America records, material about lectures and workshops, drafts of her poems and material pertaining to the nine volumes of published poetry. Also included are audio tapes. Additions donated in 1994 contain material concerning her early years living in Germany, including correspondence, diaries, school material and poems. Also included are materials concerning her first years in the United States. Additions donated in 2006 following Marx's death provide further documentation of her activities as poet and lecturer and covers the years 1947 through 2004. less

The New York Foundation is a philanthropic foundation, established in New York City in 1909 for the purpose of providing financial support towards "altruistic purposes, charitable, benevolent, educational, or otherwise." For over a century, the Foundation has awarded grants to charitable and non-profit organizations in numerous fields, including public health, workers' rights, literacy, child welfare, AIDS research and treatment, women's suffrage, racial equity, legal aid, the alleviation of poverty, civil rights, immigrants' rights, and education reform, among many others. Although some earlier grants supported programs in other areas of the country, the bulk of the Foundation's grants since 1975 have been awarded to organizations in New York City, with a focus on grassroots community organizations. less

Eleonora von Mendelssohn was a German stage actress who emigrated to America at the time of Hitler's rise to power. She was actively involved in aiding other emigres and had much contact with the German acting community in Hollywood and New York. The collection includes personal and business papers and memorabilia of Eleonora von Mendelssohn and family members dating from 1880-1949. Papers reveal aspects of Mendelssohn's life, as well as problems, concerns and political tenor of the German emigre community in the United States during this period. less
