Frederick Innes Allen (1859-1938) of Auburn, New York was an attorney who served as Commissioner of Patents during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. His wife, Cornelia Margaret Seward, was the granddaughter of William H. Seward. Frederick I.Allen's research into the history of the Allen family includes correspondence, genealogical notes, clippings, photographs, printed material, and family charts. Original family documents in the collection dated 1706-1838 consist chiefly of correspondence, land records, and wills of Daniel Allen of Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York and Adams, Massachusetts. Also present is a notebook containing poetry, spelling or handwriting exercises, recipes, and miscellaneous notes. Additional research notes in the collection relate to the genealogies of the Palmer and other allied families. less

Belknap, Center, Innes, and Murphy were notable names in New England as early as the 17th century. Robert Lenox Belknap, the New York businessman most prominently represented in this collection, was a direct descendant of Abraham Belknap (d. 1643), an early settler in Salem, Massachusetts; and Joseph Belknap (1630-1712) of Boston. The Center and Innes families counted author Henry Livingston and Francis Lewis, signer of the Declaration of Independence, among their ancestors. Dr. Deas Murphy, father of Serena Deas Murphy Center, served as Chief of Surgery at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, N.Y. The William Conrad Kopper and Serena Deas Murphy Center genealogical research files contain family papers and genealogical research pertaining to the Belknap, Center, Innes, Murphy, and allied families. Included in the collection are genealogical notes, pedigrees, genealogical charts, as well as original family documents such as wills, contracts, diaries, scrapbooks, and photographs. less

Franklin Marion Gentry, scientist and author of Manhasset, Long Island, New York, was born on March 10, 1898 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He married Violet Dewey Young on August 6, 1925 in Lexington, Kentucky. She was born on June 24, 1900 in Lexington. They had one daughter, Courtenay Dewey Gentry, born on January 18, 1931 in New York City. Franklin M. Gentry was the son of Franklin Marion Gentry I (1853-1904) of Kentucky and Helen Norton Harrison (1864-1933) of Georgia. Gentry I and Harrison were married on June 30, 1897 in New Orleans. The Gentry family in America began with Nicholas Gentry I and his brother Samuel who came to Virginia as British soldiers around 1677. The Gentry Collection is primarily research correspondence and notes of Franklin Marion Gentry who was compiling genealogical information on all lines of his and his wife, Violet Dewey Young's, families in order to secure memberships in the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Daughters of the American Revolution for his wife and daughter. Some of the research was conducted by Lillie Baker Young (Mrs. Samuel Arthur), mother of Violet. The bulk of this material is from the early 1950s. The collection also includes photocopied documents such as wills, military payment records, indenture records and land claims from the 18th and 19th century and even as early as 1675. These are all photocopies or transcriptions made in the 1950s for research purposes. Other papers include photocopied articles from reference books on the genealogy of specific families, lineage charts, and photocopies of coats of arms for various families. There are also a few clippings, photos, and maps, and a small amount of printed material. Other family names with more than one folder of material besides Gentry, Young, Dewey and Harrison are Adams, Allan, Brooks, Foster, Harris, Norton, Smith, Terrell and Thruston. This collection spans multiple generations and consists of mostly 19th and 20th century family correspondence, financial and legal documents, diaries, writings, scrapbooks, personal miscellany, photographs and genealogical research.
