Parsons-Meares Ltd. is a New York City-based costume shop that builds costumes for professional theater, dance, and opera. The Parsons-Meares costume bibles includes sketches and renderings (primarily reprographic), color photographs, fitting and sourcing notes, and textile swatches for costumes designed for 19 theater, opera, and ballet productions from the 1990s through 2011, primarily in New York City. Most productions are represented by one bible; some productions have multiple bibles. less

Designer, producer and writer, John Boyt (1921-1983) was born in Newark, New Jersey. From the 1940s to the early 1980s, Boyt designed costumes, sets, and occasionally lighting, for theater, dance, opera, television, and film. His credits include Broadway, off-Broadway, and regional theater productions, as well as New York City Ballet and New York City Opera. Original costume designs by John Boyt and a few pages of notes for three Broadway productions: 12 designs for J. M. Synge's The playboy of the western world (1946) with Burgess Meredith; 36 designs for William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra (1947) with Katharine Cornell and Charlton Heston; and 37 designs for The lovers by Leslie Stevens (1956) with Morris Carnovsky and Joanne Woodward. Charles Ludlam, actor, director, and playwright, was born April 12, 1943. He began his career in 1966 with the PlayHouse of the Ridiculous, both as a performer and playwright. Artistic differences caused Ludlam to leave and form his own company, The Ridiculous Theatrical Company, which achieved international recognition. Ludlam's three most successful plays were BLUEBEARD, STAGE BLOOD, and CAMILLE. Although the company attracted grant funding, it was always on the edge of the avant-garde and finances were uncertain. The company made its final tour with Ludlam in the first months of 1980 and then disbanded. Ludlam died on May 28, 1987. The collection consists of diaries, notebooks, scripts, set and costume designs, clippings, transcripts of interviews, and manuscript pages from a published collection of Ludlam's plays. This material was collected as research material for The Complete Plays of Charles Ludlam. The material provides valuable insight into every stage of Ludlam's playwriting process from the development of an idea to its realization on stage. Since Ludlam relied so heavily on improvisation, the information contained in the notebooks and plot outlines in this collection cannot be found anywhere else. less

Consists of color copies of eleven sheets of costume designs for the musical LEGS DIAMOND that opened at Broadway's Mark Hellinger Theatre on December 26, 1988. Gabriel M. Powell, artist and designer was born in 1902. His early career, in the 1930's, was in dance where he worked as a dancer and designer for the Gluck-Sandor Ballet Theatre. Among the company were such noted dancers as Klarna Pinska, Jose Limon and Jerome Robbins. By 1936, however, he was a designer of theatrical sets, and created the set for OUTWARD BOUND at the Forrest Theatre. Later productions included work on the musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein and Irving Berlin. In his later years, Mr. Powell concentrated on his career as an easel artist. The Gabriel M. With music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Johnny Mercer from the book SARATOGA TRUNK by Edna Ferber, the show was dramatized and directed by Morton Da Costa. Stage, screen and television costume designer, Dorothy Jeakins (1914-1995) was born in San Diego, California. She won a scholarship to the Otis Art Institute, worked for the WPA and Walt Disney Studios. She designed costumes for dozens of films, winning three Academy Awards for Joan of Arc, 1948, starring Ingrid Bergman and directed by Victor Fleming; Samson and Delilah, 1949, starring Victor Mature and Hedy Lamarr; and The night of the iguana, 1964, starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr. She died at the age of 81 at a nursing home in Santa Barbara, California. 66 original color and black and white costume designs (most with swatches) for theatrical productions, by costume designer Dorothy Jeakins, of King Lear by William Shakespeare for the Theatre Group at UCLA, 1964; Major Barbara by George Bernard Shaw at the Martin Beck Theatre, 1956; Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare for the American Shakespeare Festival, Stratford Connecticut, 1959; and Winesburg, Ohio by Christopher Sergel, based on Sherwood Anderson's book, at the National Theatre, 1958. Bonnie Cashin was born on Sept. 28, 1908 (published dates vary) in Fresno, California. While still a teenager, she received her first professional assignment for the producers of the Fanchon and Marco dance troupe. Moving with the troupe to New York, circa 1934, Cashin began designing for stage shows at the Roxy Theatre. Around 1937, she became head designer for Adler & Adler, a New York City coat and suit manufacturer. Cashin went back to California in 1943, where she worked until 1949 on some 60 Twentieth Century-Fox motion pictures. Cashin returned to fashion design around 1950, becoming one of America's most influential designers and winning numerous awards. She died while undergoing open heart surgery at New York University Hospital, New York City, on Feb. 3, 2000. Approximately 211 color costume designs, mostly for motion pictures, circa 1944 - circa 1949, including Anna and the king of Siam, 1946; Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe, 1945; Home in Indiana, 1944; Junior miss, 1945; Laura, 1944; A tree grows in Brooklyn, 1945; and Where do we go from here?, 1945. Motley is the corporate name of sisters Margaret Harris (1904-2000) and Sophie Harris (1900-1966), and Elizabeth Montgomery Wilmot (1902-1993), who designed sets and costumes for theatre, opera, ballet and motion pictures from 1932 to 1976 in England and the United States. Their first designs, for London productions by John Gielgud and Michel Saint-Denis, were very successful, and in 1936 Saint-Denis founded The London Theatre Studio (1936-1939), a radical new theatre school which incorporated courses in theatre design taught by the Motleys. In 1940, Margaret Harris and Elizabeth Montgomery went to New York and remained there until the end of World War II, designing for numerous productions on Broadway. In 1946, Margaret Harris returned to London, while Elizabeth stayed, married the writer and journalist Patrick Wilmot (1904-1960), and continued to design for plays, musicals, operas, and ballets in New York until 1966. Original color costume designs on paper, tracing paper, or board, possibly created by Elizabet (Montgomery) Wilmot, one of the three women who designed under the pseudonym Motley. Includes drawings for Miss Liberty (1949); Paint your wagon (1951); The tempest (1945); and Tovarich (1963), as well as designs for Laurence Olivier (Henry II) in Becket (1961); Richard Burton (Philip the Bastard) in King John (1953); and Michael Redgrave (Warbeck) in The witch of Edmonton (1936). less

Designer, dancer and actress, Ruth A. Sobotka, was born in Vienna in 1925. She emigrated to the United States with her family when she was 14. Sobotka attended the University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Institute of Technology. She also studied ballet at the School of American Ballet and was a dancer for Ballet Society and New York City Ballet. Sobotka designed costumes for both theater and dance. She appeared as "The girl" in Man Ray's segment of the Hans Richter avant-garde film, Dreams that money can buy (1947) and later worked on several films in various capacities. In 1955, she married film director Stanley Kubrick; they divorced in 1961. After retiring from dancing, Sobotka focused on acting and designing. She died after a brief illness at Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital in June1967, at the age of 42. Approximately 71 original color costume and set designs (mostly costume designs) by Ruth Sobotka. Aladdin and the wonderful lamp is the only play represented in the collection that was actually produced (Unit Theatre Group, 1966); there are also index cards with notes and swatches for this show. Sobotka's costume and set designs for Bathsheba by Jacques Deval (1947), Ladies in retirement by Edward Percy and Reginald Denham (ca. 1944), The merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare (ca. 1944), Twelfth night by William Shakespeare (ca. 1944), a Passion play (ca. 1944), and a Shakespearean production (ca. 1944), were never executed, or were Carnegie Institute of Technology schoolwork. less

Set and costume designer Raoul Pène Du Bois (1914-1985) was born on Staten Island, New York. His career began in his teens and spanned some six decades, during which he designed for theater, film, dance, and other live productions. Du Bois received two Tony Awards for his set designs for Wonderful town (1953), and his costume designs for No, no, Nanette (1971). He died at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, following a stroke. Original color drawings mostly of costume designs, but also set designs and detail drawings by Raoul Pène Du Bois. Many of the designs are for the musical Jumbo, music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Lorenz Hart (Hippodrome Theatre, 1935), with masks by Wynn; several designs are initialed and dated "JR 35" and are possibly by James Reynolds who also designed costumes for this production. Stage designer Will Steven Armstrong (1930-1969) was born in New Orleans. He was a graduate of Louisiana State University and served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea. Armstrong received a Master's Degree from Yale University in 1957. After working as production designer for the Williamstown Summer Theatre (now Williamstown Theatre Festival) from 1955 to 1957, Armstrong came to New York to work under Boris Aronson, Jo Mielziner and Donald Oenslager. The American Shakespeare Festival (Stratford, Connecticut), Long Wharf Theatre, National Repertory Theatre, the Phoenix Theatre, and the New York City Opera were among the companies for which he designed sets, lighting, and costumes. His Broadway design credits include over 40 productions, winning a Tony award in 1962 for his set designs for Carnival! (Imperial Theatre, 1961). Armstrong also received an Obie award for his set designs for Ivanov (Renata Theatre, 1958). He was married to Jo Grady and they had a daughter, Sloane. Armstrong died while on vacation in New Mexico at the age of 39. Original costume and set designs by Will Steven Armstrong. American Shakespeare Festival Theatre productions included in the collection are Coriolanus (1965), Julius Caesar (1966), The merry wives of Windsor (1959), and Romeo and Juliet (1965). There are also costume designs for The beaux stratagem by George Farquhar (1959) and a set and costume design for Lysistrata by Aristophanes (1959), both produced by the Phoenix Theatre. Commedia dell'arte was a popular form of theater which began in Italy in the 16th century. It includes masked character types and stock scenarios. Performed outdoors on temporary stages, its performers utilized various props instead of elaborate scenery. Original color and black and white costume drawings, prints, lithographs, and mostly 19th century reproductions in French, Italian, English, Dutch, and German, of commedia dell'arte stock characters such as the Doctor, Harlequin, Pierrot, Pulcinella, and Scaramouche. There are also 24 panels of the Balli di Sfessania by Jacques Callot. Artists include Umberto Brunelleschi, Cenni, G. Gallina, Pietro Leone Ghezzi, Raphael Kirchner, Eugene Ladreyt, Andre-Edouard Marty, and Antoine Watteau. Nicolo Caccatrippa, Fanny Cerrito and Marc-Antoine Romagnesi are among the performers depicted in costume. less

Award winning designer of sets and costumes and a theatrical producer, Lemuel Ayers had a brief but brilliant career with extensive Broadway credits including HIGH BUTTON SHOES and OKLAHOMA! He was born in New York City and received a degree in architecture from Princeton University and one in drama from the University of Iowa. He died in 1955 at the age of forty. Collection consists of six costume and twelve set designs by Lemuel Ayers for the following productions: KISS ME KATE (1948), OUT OF THIS WORLD (1950), BLOOMER GIRL (1944), CYRANO DE BERGERAC (1946), INSIDE U.S.A. (1948), MUSIC IN THE AIR (1951), and ST. LOUIS WOMAN (1946). Executed in paint, ink and pencil on paper or illustration board, some have mat frames, a few are signed by Ayers, most are undated. less

Bernstein was also the author of 3 books: two novels, Three blue suits (1933) and The journey down (1938); and An actor's daughter (1941), an autobiography of her early life.
