Sketchbook and commonplace book of Eliza A. J., an otherwise unidentified, probably British woman who made entries circa 1825-1827. Contains 14 ink or ink-and-wash drawings, 8 watercolors, and 3 pages of manuscript transcriptions. Most drawings and paintings are signed "Eliza" and one is also signed "E A J." All entries are undated except for one, dated 1827 and the paper is watermarked 1825. Two drawings give credit to sources (Adriaen van Ostade, Thomas Orde); others are probably after other artists, though some may be original. less

Anne Margaret Graham was born in 1801, the youngest daughter of Elizabeth Susanna Davenport Graham, the children's book writer, and her husband, Thomas Graham a lawyer, of Edmond Castle in the village of Hayton, Carlisle, Cumbria in England. In 1823 she married Edward Polhill (1789-1859), with whom she had at least five children. For some years the Polhills lived in France. Anne Margaret Polhill died in Brighton on November 6, 1882. Fourty-four total drawings in a red morocco-backed sketchbook with red paper boards (watermark = "HORNE / 1818"). Most drawings in ink over pencil, eight in ink wash, two in watercolor. Scenes feature mostly Parisian characters and settings, many with humorous captions. less

Sketchbook of drawings by an unidentified artist, recording scenes of the Peak District in Derbyshire as well as country houses and churches in Essex and Hertfordshire. Most drawings are undated; of those with dates, the earliest is September 1821 and the latest is May 1822. Many scenes include the figure of a gentleman with walking stick and hat, sometimes seen with a small geologist's hammer. In one scene ("Cromford Rocks"), he is using the hammer to carve the initials "B C" into a rock. Bound in half red roan over blue-gray boards, paper with the watermark of "[RUSE T]URNERS [18]15." On the front pastedown is a contemporary book label (engraved armorial crest of falcon clutching a sheaf of wheat, above engraved initials "T. [D?]"); on the rear pastedown is another [later?] book label (woodcut of a tree, man in hat reclining underneath, cottage in the background). less
