The Equity Library Theatre (ELT) was a theatre company in New York City from 1943 to 1989, founded by actor Sam Jaffe, a representative of the Actor's Equity Association, and George Freedley, curator of the Theatre Collection of the New York Public Library. ELT was dedicated to showcasing unemployed Equity actors in classic and modern plays and musicals and to provide free theatre to New Yorkers. The Equity Library Theatre records (1944-1990) document the entire artistic and business history of the organization through administrative files and production files. less

Born in Kazan, Russia in 1900, Gard emigrated to the United States in 1924. Perhaps Gard's most famous works are his caricatures of Broadway celebrities for the walls of Sardi's restaurant, for which he was paid in meals. His drawings also appeared in The New York Herald Tribune's drama section. Gard died in New York City en route to the hospital in 1948. Mostly black and white original caricatures of theatrical productions, actors, actresses, and notables, but also includes a few motion picture celebrities and other subjects, by Alex Gard. The caricatures consist of both finished ink drawings, as well as a large number of preliminary sketches in pencil. Some drawings depict several personalities or productions in one. A few of the dozens of celebrities portrayed include Eddie Cantor, Katharine Hepburn, Bert Lahr, Ethel Merman, and Victor Moore. There are also several sketchbooks and cartoons, a number of which depict casinos, bars, and various scenes in the state of Nevada. Of note are 3 caricatures of New York theater critics, portayed as Eskimos, a marching band, and in judicial robes and wigs. less

Caricaturist, cartoonist and illustrator, Alfred Frueh, was born in Lima, Ohio in 1880. In his early career, he worked at the St. Louis post-dispatch and the New York world. From 1908 to 1909, Frueh studied art in Europe. In 1925, Frueh joined the staff of the New Yorker magazine, which published his work until 1962. Frueh died in Sharon, Connecticut in 1968. Many of the caricatures of theatrical productions appeared in the New Yorker magazine between 1925 and 1962. Productions depicted include: The children's hour by Lillian Hellman, 1934 and 1953; Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin, 1942 and 1953; Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, 1923 and 1935; Twentieth century by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur (based on a play by Charles Bruce Milholland), 1933 and 1951; and the 1934 and 1936 editions of the Ziegfeld follies. Also included are 2 caricatures of the motion picture, City lights, 1931, with Charlie Chaplin, and 1 caricature of the Ziegfeld Theatre exterior, depicting the tower of the building as a woman's leg and foot, 1929. less
