James Joyce was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, playwright, poet, and literary critic. Richard William Wallace (1872-1927) was an American commercial artist and advertising executive who resided in Paris for a number of years. The collection (3 items in 1 slipcase) comprises two autograph letters signed by James Joyce, 1922 April 24 and 1926 December 22, and one autograph letter signed by his son George (Giorgio) Joyce, 1922 June 17, all written to James Joyce's friend, Richard Wallace. James Joyce's letter of 1922 April 24 (one page) encloses a letter for Wallace's perusal (not present) and mentions an invitation to lunch and other matters. The letter bears a pencilled note signed "W." Joyce's letter of 1926 December 22 (one page) extends holiday greetings and best wishes for Wallace's health. At Ezra Pound's request he asks Wallace to obtain information from Dr. [Joseph] Collins about a New York collector. Both letters are written in ink and addressed "Dear Wallace." George Joyce's letter (two pages on one leaf, in ink), is written at Paris and addressed "Dear Mr. Wallace." Writing on his father's behalf, he asks Wallace to convey Joyce's thanks to Collins for his article in the New York Times, and supplies several corrections regarding his father's life and the novel Ulysses less

Grace Moore was an American soprano who sang at the Metropolitan Opera and other opera houses. She married Valetin Parera in 1931 and was also known as Grace Moore Parera. She died in an airplane crash near Copenhagen. Includes letters informing Grace Moore of honors, notes inviting her husband and herself to official occasions while traveling in Europe, 3 personal letters from Grace Moore to her friend Humphrey Doulens and 1 letter from Val Parera to Doulens soon after Grace Moore's death. During the Second World War she organized and performed in hundreds of lunch time concerts at the National Gallery which had been emptied because of the threat of air raids. Marjorie Yates, a pianist and friend of Myra Hess, was born in England and moved in 1926 to the United States, where she taught music until 1968. Henriette Michelson was a piano teacher at The Juilliard School in New York City during the 1930's and 1940's, and later a resident of Jerusalem. Tobias Matthay (1858-1945) was an English piano teacher, author of works on piano technique, and composer. Lilly (or Lily) Popper was Henry Cowell's colleague in a school of music. 13 TLS written from San Quentin Prison where Henry Cowell was serving a sentence for a morals charge, later pardoned. He discusses prison life, work in the jute mill, difficulties of continuing music composition in a restricted setting, authorship of a book on melody, concerts for the other prisoners, teaching in the prison's education department, study of Spanish and Japanese languages, letters he has received from other composers and friends, concern for the school in his absence and recommendations for studies and administrative matters there, and his gratitude for efforts made on his behalf. In the final letter he has learned that his sentence will be 15 years, of which he must serve at least 4. less

Marguerita Sylva (1875-1957) was a mezzo-soprano and actress on whose business stationery for "Sylva Management" in New York is printed "The World's Greatest Carmen.". In 23 ALS and 2 postcards, Marguerita Sylva's salutations progress from "Dear Mr. Chamberlain Brown" to "Dear Chamberlain" but she consistently discusses bookings, concerts, and acting roles. Other papers include business letters from other agents to Mme. Sylva, and programs and brochures with marginal notes in Sylva's hand. He became a Roman Catholic in 1944. Morris Hochberg was a conductor and violinist, and his wife Sylvia was a noted pianist. Their daughter Rena was born in 1944. Mills lived in New York City, and the Hochbergs in Detroit throughout the correspondence. 83 ALS in ink or pencil from Charles Mills, 3 ALS from Charles Mills and his wife Pat or Patricia, 3 ALS from Patricia alone, and 1 ALS from a later wife Selma, all to Morris Hochberg, Morris and Sylvia, or Morris, Sylvia and Rena Hochberg ; 1 ALS from Charles Mills to oboist Lare Wardrup, sent in care of Morris Hochberg. Sir Francis Cowley Burnand (1836-1917) was a playwright, humorist, and editor of Punch from 1880 to 1906. The F.C. Burnand letters and memoranda (1873-1907) were written to Punch staff and other colleagues and associates. Subjects include the illustrations and writings to be included in Punch and the reception of Burnand's humorous plays, including Pickwick (1889) and Private Inquiry (1891). Most of the letters are brief. Correspondents include Arthur Cecil Blunt, H. Savile Clarke, W. Beatty-Kingston, E.J. Milliken, James Payn, and W. Moy Thomas. In his letters to Thomas, Burnand discusses his ideas about burlesque theater and a potentially libelous review of Pickwick that was printed in the Society Herald. Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951) was a prominent African American author of the early 20th century, and more notably the first African American filmmaker. The Oscar Micheaux papers consist of professional correspondence, financial records, handwritten scenarios and typed dialogues for his films, galleys and proofs of published work. Additonally, there are ephemeral items, clippings, prospectuses, and other forms of advertising for his works. less

The Butler family papers relate to two Pennsylvania families: the Butlers of Washington County, specifically, William N. Butler, a graduate of Geneva College and a practicing lawyer, and his son William F. Butler, a graduate of Geneva College and Howard University Law School; and the Carters of Beaver County. The elder Butler worked as recording secretary of the Civilian Defense Department, and he was a probation officer for the Beaver County courts. In 1964 and 1969, he was appointed to the Probation and Parole Board and was designated its acting chairman in 1974. Butler died in 1977. The Butler family papers include letters written by William N. Butler to his son, William F., while the latter was a student at Howard Law School, 1930-1931. Many of these Depression-era letters discuss the loss of jobs and bank closures in the family's hometown of Washington, Pennsylvania, as well as his own financial difficulties; Butler, Sr., gives advice to his son as well as relates family news. A file containing letters to William F. Butler signed "Aunty" speak of family matters. Additionally, the collection contains a notebook of a clergyman named Peters from Uniontown, Pennsylvania, with notes taken from the Bible, 1847. Printed material includes ephemera (1917-1920) and news clippings (1954-1996) related to the Butler and Carter families. less

The World War II letters from African-American Soldiers collection consists of letters from African-American servicemen to Elnora (Nora) Bing Williams and her husband, Edgar Thomas (Ned) Williams of Brooklyn, New York. The correspondents are relatives and friends, and the letters describe their social and recreational activities on and off U.S. military bases. The soldiers share news about other family members and friends back home as well as those also in the military. In only a few letters were their lives as African-American servicemen portrayed, or their relationships with white military men or townspeople described. The letters from friends also describe training to become non-commissioned officers. All of the servicemen had been drafted; a few men attained the rank of sergeant, corporal and lieutenant. Several were stationed in the Pacific and Europe, and obliquely wrote about general conditions there. less
