Caricaturist, cartoonist and illustrator, Alfred Frueh, was born in Lima, Ohio in 1880. In his early career, he worked at the St. Louis post-dispatch and the New York world. From 1908 to 1909, Frueh studied art in Europe. In 1925, Frueh joined the staff of the New Yorker magazine, which published his work until 1962. Frueh died in Sharon, Connecticut in 1968. Black and white original caricatures and color linocuts of theatrical productions and personalities. Many of the caricatures of theatrical productions appeared in the New Yorker magazine between 1925 and 1962. Productions depicted include: The children's hour by Lillian Hellman, 1934 and 1953; Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin, 1942 and 1953; Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, 1923 and 1935; Twentieth century by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur (based on a play by Charles Bruce Milholland), 1933 and 1951; and the 1934 and 1936 editions of the Ziegfeld follies. Also included are 2 caricatures of the motion picture, City lights, 1931, with Charlie Chaplin, and 1 caricature of the Ziegfeld Theatre exterior, depicting the tower of the building as a woman's leg and foot, 1929. less

Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003) was an American caricaturist known for his distinctive black and white line drawings. The Al Hirschfeld papers (1905-2006) hold thousands of photographs documenting twentieth-century theater, film, and television; they were in Hirschfeld's possession for reference purposes. While these photographs comprise the majority of the collection, the collection documents other aspects of his career and personal life predominately through correspondence and photographs. less

The Eaves-Brooks Costume Company (New York, N.Y.) was sold to Dodger Costumes, Ltd., affiliated with Dodger Productions, in 1998. It also contains working records such as cast lists, contact lists, supplies order forms, a small amount of correspondence, cost estimates, worksheets and shipping lists. Robert Edmond Jones was born in Milton, New Hampshire and attended Harvard University. Jones became an innovative force in modern set design for the American theatre. He also designed for opera and dance and was named Radio City Music Hall's first art director in 1932. Jones died at his birthplace at the age of 67. Architect, stage designer, and writer Claude Fayette Bragdon (1866-1946) worked as an architect in Rochester, New York City, and Buffalo, before moving to New York City in 1923, where he worked primarily as stage designer. Bragdon designed for several shows produced by actor and theatrical manager Walter Hampden. Bragdon was also the author of several books on architecture, design, and theosophy. 88 original designs and 4 prints, for 11 productions on which Claude Bragdon collaborated with Walter Hampden from 1923-1938. Includes a doorway design by Bragdon, and his own signs and captions for an exhibition of his scene and costume designs in 1938. less

The records reflect the origin and activities of the New York Shakespeare Festival, its general administration, and the staging of its productions, including their creation, management, booking, and promotion. The files of the Casting Office, except in the form of carbon copies in other series, are not included in this archive. There are also gaps in the files of the Associate Producer. Contracts were removed and require special permission of the curator to access. Oral history materials in Series I and some correspondence in Series V are restricted until the year 2043 in order to protect the privacy of individual persons. Series XIV (Oversized Materials) is not fully processed and is currently unavailable for research. less
